Noise - A Preventable Workplace Hazard
Noise induced hearing loss remains one of the most significant health risks and is a common, yet preventable workplace injury across Western Australia. Employers and workers have a shared responsibility to manage noise exposure in line with Safe Work WA guidance and the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) requirements.
What can you/your company do to manage noise?
Noise Survey
A personalised Noise Survey can be carried out to assess all noise sources in your workplace, including equipment, machinery and any other contributing factors. A noise survey also includes a review of your current hearing protection, to ensure it provides adequate protection based on the measured noise levels.
Personal Noise Monitoring
Personal noise monitoring involves workers wearing a portable noise dosimeter throughout their shift to accurately measure their individual noise exposure levels.
Ear Plug Fit Testing
Conducting ear plug fit testing for each worker ensures:
- The provided HPD is suitable for your workers
- Is based on their work tasks
- Recommendations for other HPD options, if necessary
- Ensures that worker know how to correctly fit ear plugs.
