Audimetric Testing
Our Occupational Hygienist, Rachel Thompson and Occupational Hygiene Advisor, Andrew Thompson, are competent Audiometric Surveillance (Audiometric Hearing) Testers, as well as Noise Officers. Occupational Hygiene Australia has all of the required portable testing equipment, which means we can come to your workplace anywhere and anytime to conduct Audiometric Hearing Tests in a room on site.
In WA mining and other workplaces, exposure to hazardous noise is a significant health risk, making Audiometric Hearing Testing an essential part of workforce protection. Under the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022, mine operators must provide baseline and periodic audiometric testing for workers who are required to wear hearing protection as part of their role. Audiometric hearing testing helps identify early signs of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and ensure hearing conservation programs are effective. Testing is conducted in accordance with Australian Standard AS/NZS 1269 – Occupational Noise Management, which outlines requirements for monitoring, assessment, and worker protection.
Both WorkSafe WA and the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) emphasise the importance of:
-
Reference Test: Conducted within the first 3 months of commencing work in a noise-exposed role – workers should avoid noisy environments for at least 16 hours prior to testing to ensure accurate results
-
Monitoring Test: Conducted on site, mid to end of shift to reflect realistic daily exposure effects
-
Conducting audiometric hearing tests within 2 years and recommended annually for workers who are also exposed to ototoxins
-
Conducting noise surveys
-
Reviewing noise controls
-
PPE effectiveness, ie ear plug fit testing
-
Ensuring workers receive training on noise hazards and hearing protection
Early detection through properly timed audiometric hearing testing protects workers’ hearing and ensures compliance with WA mining regulations. Protect your people. Manage the noise. Prevent the loss.
